The subconscious mind

We have a conscious mind and a subconscious mind. The conscious mind is what we are aware of: where we are, what we are eating, thinking, planning, analysing and short-term memory. Our subconscious mind is very deep and contains information that is beyond our apprehension, like emotions, habits, relationship patterns, addictions, core beliefs and values, creativity, imagination and last but not least our amazing intuition.

 The conscious mind always tries to control behaviours, habits and beliefs but fails to do so because the subconscious mind has all the power and influence. Basically, we attract things in our lives based on what is in our subconscious mind. 


So I thought to myself, ‘I attracted all this to myself, it can’t be, why would I do that. Surely I would stop it if I was in control.’ Sadly, it was my subconscious mind that was in control and directed everything and I had no idea how to get access to it, so I needed to learn how to do that.

In order to attract something different to our lives we need to look at what is in our subconscious mind and change it. So I was on a mission to find out what’s in there. This mystical place where I have never been before.

What you believe subconsciously, whether it makes sense or not, it is what you will co-create in your reality.


Now I understand that everything that happens to me was a calling from my soul, my higher self, God, Source, the universe, which are all the same: light, love the energy and we all have it within us. When we hurt, it is the soul that wants to get our attention and say ‘Hey, I'm here, Helloo. 


Our soul wants us to quiet our minds and listen, her voice is very gentle and we can not hear her from all the distractions that we have in our lives, such as TV, social media, News, school, family, friends, shopping, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs and everything in between. These things can be very loud but give us little or no value to our purpose and why we are here on this earth. We need peace, we need quiet, nature, we need to go inside, so we can hear the teachings of the soul.

Limiting beliefs

As we have discussed previously subconscious beliefs create our reality and these beliefs are not all positive. A lot of these core values and beliefs are negative and are called limiting beliefs.

These limiting beliefs mentioned have been programmed in our brains from the moment we were conceived. According to Sigmund Freud, our personalities and our patterns of behaviour are developed in our childhood between 0-7 years old. This is when the Id, the ego and the superego are developed. The ego operates in the conscious mind, also in the pre conscious, which is in-between conscious and subconscious mind. The superego operates mainly in the preconscious mind and the id in the subconscious.

Also, we energetically take our families’ and our environments’ energy in different areas of our life; for example money, love, health, relationships and career. If for example, the energy around love was lack, the energy of lack would be dominant in a person throughout life.

Freud divided the mind into the conscious mind (or the ego) and the unconscious mind, which was later was then further divided into the id (or instincts and drive) and the superego (or conscience). The superego incorporates the values and morals of society which are learned from one's parents and others.

The conscious mind contains all of the thoughts, memories, feelings, and wishes of which we are aware at any given moment. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talk about rationally. A part of this includes our memory, which is not always part of consciousness but can be retrieved easily at any time and brought into our awareness.

The unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside of our conscious awareness. Most of the contents of the unconscious are unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict.

The preconscious consists of anything that could potentially be brought into the conscious mind.

When we are children we learn behaviour and pattern of thought from our parents, siblings, family, TV, friends and we absorb the energy around us. This forms our personalities and overall vibrational frequency. I will explain what vibrational frequency is later.

So, as Carl Jung said, we need to make the subconscious conscious if we want to change our lives and not blame fate for our negative experiences.

The consequences of not doing the work on limiting beliefs leads to skewed thinking, which causes fear-based choices, leading to misguided actions. These misguided actions create painful experiences. After this experience we generalise, interpret the negative feelings and conclude and confirm the negative thought patterns, which are the limiting beliefs. This is a never ending cycle, if we don’t go inside and dig down deep to find what lies within.

Thought create things

I remember reading ‘The secret’ by Rhonda Byrne and I was fascinated, I watched the movie many times. It seemed to make me feel better and encourage me to think positively. The book highlights the importance of positive thinking and its effects on our lives.

We are the books we read, the movies we watch, the music we listen to, the people we meet, the dreams we have, the conversations we engage in, we are what we take from these. If 5 of our friends drink, smoke, take drugs, we will be the 6th. Our environment determines our experiences, until we become conscious of what we do. It all stems down from our belief system, which is what we think repeatedly.

Science of positive thinking

Positive thinking releases chemicals in the body like Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin. These are essential hormones that are naturally produced by glands in the body and they make us happy. All of them help stabilise our immune system.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward and pleasure centres. It also regulates emotional responses, and it enables us to take action to move toward our dreams. Enough dopamine makes us feel more alive, focused, productive, and motivated. It allows us to experience feelings of enjoyment, bliss, and even euphoria.

Not enough dopamine can make us unfocused, unmotivated and even depressed. It can even result in Parkinson's Disease, and people with low dopamine activity may be more prone to addiction.


There are both healthy and unhealthy ways to increase dopamine. Unhealthy ways to increase dopamine can lead to self-destruction and addictions.The use and abuse of caffeine, alcohol, sugar, drugs, shopping, sex, video games, online porn, power, and gambling are all effective, but temporary, dopamine boosters.

Fortunately, we don’t have to resort to sex, drugs, and alcohol to boost dopamine levels. There are many healthy, proven ways to increase dopamine naturally instead.

Healthy ways include eating the right foods, physical exercise, meditation, and using proper goal-setting techniques.

Physical exercise helps produce new brain cells, slows down brain cell ageing, and improves the flow of nutrients to the brain.


The benefits of meditation have been proven in over 1,000 studies. Regular meditators experience an enhanced ability to learn, increased creativity, and deep relaxation. Binaural Beats Meditation can optimise brain waves and improve focus and concentration. Creative hobbies of all kinds, including knitting, quilting, sewing, drawing, photography, woodworking, and home repair, bring the brain into a meditative state. Listening to music can also cause release of dopamine.


Taking a shower with around 14C° water can increase dopamine up to 250%. This can boosts our mood and productivity all day, even more than drinking coffee.

Serotonin is another hormone produces in the body which impacts every part of the body, from our emotions to our motor skills. Serotonin is considered a natural mood stabiliser. It’s the chemical that helps with sleeping, eating, and digesting.


When we hug or kiss a loved one, oxytocin levels increase; hence, oxytocin is often called "the love hormone." In fact, the hormone plays a huge role in all pair bonding. The hormone is greatly stimulated during sex, birth, and breastfeeding. Oxytocin is the hormone that underlies trust. Serotonin also help reduce depression and anxiety, heal wounds and maintain bone health. When serotonin levels are normal, we feel happier, calmer, more focused, and more emotionally stable.


Negative thinking releases Cortisol and Adrenaline, which prevents the positive chemicals from being released into the body. This produces a stressful and chaotic environment for cells and we become under pressure, unable to experience joy.

Thoughts are energy

Everything is energy. Atoms are more than 90% empty space and 10% vibrating frequency, many atoms together make up a molecule, many molecules make up organelles, different organelles together are known as cells, many cells put together make up tissues, organs are made from tissue, which make up organ systems like respiratory system, digestive, skeletal system etc., which are parts of the human body. If an atom is more than 90% space and atoms make up the body, this means we are more than 90% space. Our thoughts are electrical impulses which send messages to glands to produce chemicals or hormones which make us feel a certain way. So thoughts and emotions are energy or vibrational frequencies

Frequency of emotion

So emotional energy vibrates at different frequencies. In physics, the unit given for frequency is Hertz (Hz), or a number of waves per second.

This is a diagram from David Hawkins’s book ‘Power vs Force’.


The above diagram is the different frequencies that represent different emotions. The lower the emotional frequency the more unpleasant and damaging it is to the boys.


To be powerful you need to have a vibration above 200. The aim is to raise your vibrational frequency as much as possible to move to a better feeling.


It can sometimes be difficult to raise our vibration in a world where we are being conditioned to feel like you are a victim, to live in fear and to feel inadequate. We are being made to believe that our safety, power and freedom comes from outside sources. This affects our health and leaves us vulnerable to being manipulated and controlled.

The media constantly bombards us with messages of fear, separation, intolerance and discrimination by focusing on terrorism, criminals, economic decline, suffering and war.


Despite all of this we need to have a daily practice with ensures that our vibration is high enough so that we don't live in low vibrational emotions. Some things you can do to raise your vibration are spending time in nature, dancing, singing, art, yoga and meditation which I will expand on later. Positive emotions promote the production of ‘happy’ hormones, which makes us even happier and negative emotions promote the production of ‘stress’ hormones which makes us even more stressed and fearful.


Everything is energy and energy is frequency or vibrations, so images have a vibration, sound has a vibration, numbers have a vibration, people have a vibration. We become what we predominantly surround ourselves with. If we surround ourselves with negative, fearful people, who gossip and complain all day, we either become like them or they suck the life energy out of us.


In order for us to attract a better, more loving, peaceful, fun, passionate experiences we need to raise our vibration, as we are vibrational beings. This is how we will eventually find alignment. There are many ways to raise our vibration. 


Some of them are:

1. Meditation

2. Spend time in nature, walk on grass barefoot (Earthing).

3. Do what you love/ enjoy/ lose yourself in/ create art, create music/dance/gardening.

4. Read an uplifting book/ article

5. Watch an uplifting video or a movie

6. Listen to a high vibration music

Transmuting limiting beliefs

Transmuting means changing energy from one form to another. The type of energy we are talking about here are limiting beliefs and the emotions that come with it. For example, the belief that ‘I am not good enough’ and the emotion that comes with it is sadness, hurt, fear, shame, guilt, self-doubt, lovelessness, maybe anger and resentment. 


We have talked about positive thinking and affirmations, but after doing a lot of that I started realising that I had a lot of repressed emotions or stuck emotional energy. These are blocks which prevent us from the freedom that we long for. I knew that these repressed emotions needed to be addressed. I was guided to go through Youtube and I came across a video by Christie Marie Sheldon who talks about energetic blocks that literally block our abundance. I watched her youtube video about the Maharishi effect and energy, vibrations, how our thought create our reality and repressed emotions that we have which block abundance in every part of our life.


Dr Masaru Emoto did an experiment in 1994 using water to see how positive and negative energies effect it. First of all he froze some water and looked at the molecules under a microscope. He saw shapeless molecules.


Next, he froze more bottles and labeled them with negative and positive phrases, such as ‘love’, ‘thanks’, ‘gratitude’, ‘joy’, ‘I hate you’, ‘you make me sick’, ‘you fool’, then left for a few hours. The water molecules observed for the positive phrases were beautiful crystals and the ones for the negative were no shape blobs.

The human body is made up of 70 % water, so we need to be conscious of the kind of energies are we transmitting in our own lives when we speak to ourselves and others. We tend to sometimes be hard on ourselves for our mistakes and judge and criticise others for theirs. This has a very damaging effect on our bodies as a whole.


Cellular biologist Bruce Lipton said: “Your mind will adjust the body’s biology and behaviour to fit with your beliefs. If you’ve been told you’ll die in six months and your mind believes it, you most likely will die in six months. That’s called the nocebo effect, the result of a negative thought, which is the opposite of the placebo effect, where healing is mediated by a positive thought.”


Our thoughts are so powerful that they don't only affect us but, when harnessed collectively, they can change the outcomes of society as a whole. This phenomenon is called the Maharishi Effect and was published in a paper in 1976. It was reported that when 1% of a community practiced meditation, the crime rate was reduced by 16%.


In 1960 Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of this movement, predicted that one percent of a population practicing transcendental meditation technique would produce an improved quality of life for the whole population.


So how do we actually meditate to access our subconscious mind? How do we reach a meditative, relaxed state of mind. There are 3 main wave frequencies that the brain vibrates at: Beta, Alpha, Theta. 


Brain waves

Beta waves range from 14 Hz to 30 Hz and it’s when we are awake, alert and engaged, for example chatting or surfing the web.

Alpha waves range between 9 Hz and 13 Hz and it’s when we are physically and mentally relaxed, awake but drowsy.

Theta waves range between 4 Hz and 8 Hz and it’s active when we feel very sleepy and have reduced consciousness, perfect deep meditative state.

Below 4 Hz is a Delta brainwave which is a complete blackout, deep dreamless sleep and loss of bodily awareness, but we won't focus on Delta brain waves.

We can consciously and easily choose to enter a Theta state of mind. It is the most amazing feeling of coming home. one way of doing this is through meditation, connecting to Source or inviting the light. (This will further be discussed in the meditation section)
